In-Floor Pool Cleaning System FAQs

An in-floor system uses a series of pop-up nozzles installed on the floor and steps of your pool. These nozzles are connected to a water valve that rotates the flow of water to different groups of heads one at a time. When the heads pop up, they spray a powerful stream of water that pushes dirt and leaves toward a deep-end drain, where the debris is sucked away and filtered.

Many owners find it worth the investment because it reduces the need for manual vacuuming and eliminates the look of a bulky robot cleaner. It also helps heat the pool more efficiently because it pushes warm water from the heater directly to the bottom of the pool. However, these systems are more expensive to install and can be more difficult to repair than a simple plug-in vacuum.

Yes, the heads can get clogged with small pebbles, sand, or seeds that make it past the pump basket. If a head gets stuck in the “up” position or fails to pop up at all, there is likely debris jammed inside the nozzle. Most systems have a specialized tool that allows you to remove the head and rinse it out to fix the clog.

A true in-floor system can only be installed when a pool is being built. It requires a complex network of PVC pipes to be laid underneath the pool floor before the concrete or vinyl is installed. These pipes are all connected to a central distribution valve at the equipment pad. It is almost impossible to add this system to an existing pool without completely removing and rebuilding the pool shell.

Upgrading is a good idea if your current heads are old and frequently get stuck. Newer “high-flow” heads are designed to be more efficient and can cover a larger area of the floor with less water pressure. If you are noticing “dead spots” where dirt always gathers, installing upgraded heads in those specific areas can often solve the problem.

Operating the system is usually as simple as turning on your pool pump. The water pressure automatically activates the distribution valve, which then cycles the pop-up heads in a specific order. You can usually adjust the speed of the cleaning cycle by turning a knob on the water valve or by adjusting the speed of your variable-speed pump.
