Pool Pump Basket FAQs

The pool pump basket is a plastic strainer located inside the front of your pool pump. It acts as a second line of defense after the skimmer basket to catch leaves, twigs, and small stones before they reach the pump’s impeller. Without this basket, debris would clog the motor or break the internal parts of the pump.

First, turn off the pool pump to stop the suction. Close any valves if your pump is below the water level to prevent flooding. Unscrew the pump lid and lift the basket out. Shake out the debris into a trash can and rinse the basket with a garden hose to remove small bits of sand or dirt. Slide it back in, ensuring it is seated correctly, and put the lid back on.

You should check and clean the basket at least once a week. If you have a lot of trees around your pool or after a big storm, you might need to check it every day. If the basket is full, the water cannot flow properly, which puts a lot of stress on your pump motor.

If the lid is stuck, it is usually because the rubber O-ring is dry or the pressure is too high. First, make sure the pump is off. You can use a specialized pump lid wrench to get more leverage. Never hit the lid with a hammer, as the plastic can crack. Once you get it open, apply a bit of pool-safe silicone lubricant to the O-ring to prevent it from sticking again.

It is normal to see some air when you first start the pump, but it should disappear quickly. To “prime” the pump and remove air, fill the basket housing with water using a garden hose before closing the lid. Ensure the lid O-ring is clean and tight so air doesn’t leak in. Once the pump starts, the air will be pushed out through the pool jets.

No, you should never put chlorine tablets in the pump basket. Chlorine is highly acidic, and when the pump is off, the tablets sit in the water and create a concentrated chemical mix. This “acid water” can eat away at the metal parts of your pump, the seals, and your pool heater. Always use a dedicated floater or an automatic chlorinator instead.

If your basket has a small crack, it is usually better to replace it than to fix it. A cracked basket can let debris through, which will clog the pump’s internal impeller. If you are in an emergency, you might use a bit of waterproof epoxy to bridge a small gap, but the high pressure of the water usually makes these repairs temporary. Replacement baskets are inexpensive and easy to find.
