Pool Drain FAQs

The main drain is located at the deepest part of the pool floor. It acts as a suction point that pulls water from the bottom into the pump and filter system. This helps circulate the water and removes heavy dirt that sinks to the floor. The water is cleaned in the filter and then sent back into the pool through the wall jets.

A pool drain has a very strong suction force. It can create between 350 and 500 pounds of pressure. Because this force is strong enough to trap a swimmer underwater, modern pools use special safety covers and multiple drains to spread out the suction.

If your drain is blocked, you can often clear it by using a drain bladder attached to a garden hose. You insert the bladder into the pipe at the pump room and turn on the water to push the clog back into the pool. If the clog is stuck deep in the pipe, you may need a professional to blow out the lines with high-pressure air.

Installing a drain is a major project that usually happens when the pool is being built. A hole is dug at the deepest point and a PVC pipe is connected to the filtration system. The drain “pot” is set in concrete to keep it level, and the pool surface is plastered right up to the edge of the drain. Finally, the safety cover is screwed tightly onto the drain ring.

Yes, safety covers are required by federal law under the Virginia Graeme Baker (VGB) Act. These covers are designed with a dome shape or special grates to prevent hair or body parts from getting stuck. Even if a pool is older, it should be updated with these compliant covers to ensure everyone is safe.

Most pool drain covers need to be replaced every 3 to 7 years. The plastic degrades over time because of sun exposure and pool chemicals. Every cover has an expiration date stamped on it by the manufacturer, and it should be replaced before that date, even if it looks fine.

The easiest way to check for a leak is to look for unexplained water loss of more than a quarter-inch per day. You might also notice air bubbles in your pool pump or wet spots in the yard near the pool. A professional can use a simple dye test to see if the water is being sucked into a crack around the drain.
